Pine Cone Oregon Pine Cones:
Camping Fire Starter Discs

Camping Fire Starter Discs

These cute camping fire starter discs can easily be packed and taken on any camping or hicking trip. They burn long enough to start any fire. Plus they can get wet and still work.

You will need:

    • 1 3/4 cardboard tubes with one closed end
    • wood shavings (check in pet store for hamster bedding)
    • optional dry pine needles, cut into small pieces
    • optional shredded pine cones
    • optional whole spices for scent (like cloves, orange peel...)
    • wax
    • saw, preferable a band saw

Wax must be melted in a double boiler to reduce fire risk!

  • Place the coffee can in a pot of water on the stove. Add small pieces of wax to the coffee can and melt on low to medium heat until you have enough for the project.
  • Fill the tube with woodshavings, pine needles, shredded cones, and spices, and top with wax.
  • Note the wax will be sucked in, and you may have to top it off.
  • Let cool.
  • Cut tupe into 3/8-1/2 disks.
  • Peel a small amount of tube way, place finished product into your charcoal barbeque, and light edge of cardboard.
Do not use in gas barbeque grills.
